For the past 15 years, I’ve had the good fortune to work with some wonderful authors, scientists, editorial, production and design staff to develop illustrations on a myriad of topics. Every new project is an opportunity solve interesting visual problems, to learn more about a subject, and to create something new.
My work usually begins with research – learning more about the subject to be illustrated and finding source images to use as reference. Then the image is roughed out, which often involves experimenting with alternative ways of depicting the subject, either conceptually or compositionally. The next step is to present a sketch or sketches to the client, and make adjustments as needed. Some projects require more development, exploring different ideas through the sketch phase – others are more straightforward. The image is then finalized, using color where appropriate, and formatted for print or other use.
